The Real Cost of Booking Tables Over DM
Most independent venues still run table bookings the same way: a DM comes in, someone on staff replies with availability, a back-and-forth happens over a few messages, and eventually a table gets marked down somewhere - a notes app, a group chat, a notebook behind the bar. It feels free because no software fee is attached to it. It is not free. It costs time, and on a busy pre-event week, time is the one thing nobody has.
The deeper cost is the deposit gap. Without a way to collect payment in the same moment as the booking, most DM-based bookings never collect a deposit at all - which means no real commitment from the guest, and no real protection for the venue against a no-show on a night when that table could have gone to someone else. A held table with no deposit is a maybe, not a booking.
Then there is the data that never gets captured. A DM thread is not a guest database. There is no record of who has booked before, what they spent, whether they opted in to text updates. Every promotion starts from zero because there was never a system collecting the list in the first place.
The fix is not more discipline - it is removing the manual step. A booking link a guest can tap, pick a table, and pay a deposit to the club's own account in under a minute closes the gap between "interested" and "confirmed" without anyone on staff typing a reply at 1am.
